Error page (404)
Why it matters
Missing pages should return a real 404 status. A “soft 404” – an error page that returns 200 – can get thin error pages indexed and hides broken links.
How to fix it
- Make your error page return HTTP 404 (or 410 for removed content).
- Give it helpful links back to the main sections.
Check it with
- Bulk HTTP Status Checker – Check the status code, redirects and response time of up to 25 URLs at once.
Scoring: a passed check earns its full weight, a warning half and an error none. How the SEO score works
