WHOIS / Domain Lookup
Find a domain’s registrar, registration and expiry dates, status and name servers.
About the WHOIS / Domain Lookup
WHOIS records show who registered a domain, through which registrar, when it was created and when it expires. The modern replacement for the old WHOIS protocol is RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol), which returns structured data straight from the registry – and that is what this lookup uses.
Use it to check when your own domain expires (an expired domain can be taken by someone else in days), find the registrar to transfer or renew a domain, see the status locks that protect it, or research a competitor or a domain you want to buy. Personal owner details are normally hidden for privacy.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the owner’s name hidden?
Since GDPR (2018), most registrars redact personal contact details. You can usually contact the owner through the registrar’s relay form.
What does clientTransferProhibited mean?
It is a registrar lock that prevents the domain from being transferred without the owner unlocking it first – a normal protection.
What happens when a domain expires?
It typically enters a grace period (about 30 days), then a redemption period, after which it is released and anyone can register it.
