Why it matters

The favicon is shown in browser tabs and next to your site name in Google’s mobile results. A missing icon looks unfinished and makes your result less recognisable.

How to fix it

1. Create a square icon of at least 48×48 pixels.
2. Add <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.png"> to every page and keep /favicon.ico available.
