Favicon Checker
Check a site’s favicon, Apple touch icon and manifest icons, and whether Google can show them.
About the Favicon Checker
The favicon is the small icon shown in browser tabs, bookmarks, home screens – and next to your site in Google’s mobile search results. A sharp, recognisable favicon makes your result stand out; a missing or broken one shows a generic globe instead.
This checker finds every icon a page declares (rel="icon", Apple touch icon, Safari pinned tab and web app manifest icons) plus the default /favicon.ico, downloads each one and reads its real format and pixel size. It checks Google’s guidelines – a square icon of at least 48×48 px, ideally a multiple of 48, or an SVG – and whether you have a 180 px Apple touch icon and 192 and 512 px manifest icons, then shows the recommended HTML.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a favicon be?
Provide a 48×48 px (or larger multiple of 48) PNG or ICO, an SVG if you can, a 180×180 px Apple touch icon and 192 and 512 px icons in the web app manifest.
Why does Google not show my favicon?
Google needs a square icon of at least 48 px that it can crawl, declared with rel="icon" on the home page. Changes can take days or weeks to appear in search results.
Do I still need favicon.ico?
Modern browsers use the icons in your HTML, but some older browsers, feed readers and tools still request /favicon.ico, so keeping one is a good idea.
